Hello Everybody, Croaker are here, but they are small. They will catch
trout if you can put them in front of them. This last cold front dropped
the water temperature and temporarily made trout fishing tough. Shad
showed up yesterday (Monday) afternoon, meaning the trout and reds will
follow them into the bay system. The weather will stabilize and I believe
that we have seen the last cold front of the year. The trout that I have
been catching have been very solid fish up to 25 inches. I have heard of
bigger trout being caught in the flats while red fishing which is common
when the trout begin to arrive. Everything is pointing to a good season
and the next two weeks should show great improvement with boat limits of
trout being caught.
Until Next Time, Go Fishing!

5-1-08 The redfishing has been good on
the flats. Were using a sliding weight above an 18 inch leader. Crab, sea
lice, and pin perch have been the best bait for the reds. The trout action
is normal for this time of year. One day chicken and the next day feathers
so if you hit it right you should bag limits of trout. The bait of choice
is live croakers free-lined. The croakers are still small so use smaller
wide-gap hooks. 2/0 or 3/0 size will work ok. Most all of the shorelines
are producing fair numbers of nice trout.

Hello to Everyone. What a great time to be fishing! The weather and the
water are warming everyday. Reds and Trout are hammering baits and the
"Croaker Soaking" is beginning. But I continue to hear about gasoline
prices this and gasoline prices that. Yes they are rising, but someone
that is reading this report please e-mail me and inform me where/when is
it going to stop. I have heard of Truckers stopping on the side of the
Highways refusing to proceed because of such high cost of Diesel fuel. I
have heard this year many guides may go out of business ect., ect., etc.
Well, there is not much I can do about it except pray we find a way. The
ones that want to fish will and the others will do something else. l
myself will find a way to fish and I hope you go with me! E-mail me, use
our website "contact us", or call me - 432-349-0353 (cell).

4-2-08 Well the winds have been blowing
but it hasn't hampered our catching. The redfish action has been strong
and is getting better as our tides rise. The full moon is gone and the
fish are finally eating. Almost every shoreline has reds on it right now.
The best bait has been finger mullet and shrimp fished under a Carolina
rig. Our trout action still remains slow. A lot of undersized fish but not
many keepers. Don't miss out on the hot redfish action and book your trip
today.

5-1-08 Hello Friends! Just got off the
water and the wind is blowing again. Typical Spring day for Rockport. I
know it won't be long before we are begging for some wind but it seems
like it has blown more than usual this Spring. The fishing has really been
great with the warmer water temperatures. The Trout and Reds have been
active the past two weeks and it will just get better. The Reds are tight
against the bank and they are eating cut Mullet and Shrimp on a Carolina
rig. The Trout are in their usual spawning areas in two to three feet of
water over sand and grass and they are hitting Croaker and Shrimp. You can
freeline them or put them under a Cajun Thunder or Alameda. The artificial
bite has also been very good with Reds hitting Spoons and plastics. The
Trout are hitting some topwaters and the usual plastics as well. The go to
colors for the past two weeks has been pumpkinseed/char, purple/char, and
bone diamond. The water clarity has been the clue as to which color to
use. Dark for dirty water and light for clearer water. Hope this helps
your catching and if you want to try it with me.

Go Fishing This Week!

5-1-08 Boy does time fly! Seems only
yesterday I was writing a report for March and we're already turning
into May. Anyways....back to my report.
The last two weeks my customers have seen some ups and downs on their
fishing trips with me because of the weather (storms/fronts). Most days
we have been doing great on redfish and drum when the winds have been
howling out of the east and south east. This kind of fishing is going to
come to a sudden stop before long though on my boat. The winds should
lay some now since we're getting into May and I will be concentrating
more on trout than redfish and drum because of both the water warming up
and croaker season upon us. BTY..the croaker are still a little small
for "my taste", but they should be working and plentiful before long.
The few days I have been able to fish for trout the bite has been good
except for yesterday when I couldn't get anything going for my customers
in the bays I had been fishing. It was the day after a front coupled
with a west wind (which I hate). I took a gamble and went to a new area
that I hadn't fished in quite a while. The gamble saved the day!!! Made
two anchors and my customers had their limit of 30 trout and a few black
drum. We were ALL smiles from ear to ear. Best baits for the redfish and
drum have been live mullet or fresh dead, peeled shrimp fished on
bottom. Live shrimp has been best for trout while using some sort of
pop'n cork. I have not had many trips here lately that we have used
artificial, so I can't tell you what has been working best on that side
of the spectrum.
Until next time,
remember when the cards are down and the bet is
called, you have your Ace in the Hole,
Capt.
Brent Hopkins

4-16-08 This water situation is something
else, the tides are high one day and low the next, and that goes on daily.
Hard to pin point the fish. I've been luck one day and not so lucky the
next. The reds are still eating mudd minnows and live finger mullet (which
both have been scarce lately). But the good news it they are also hitting
on fresh dead shrimp. I've been taking live shrimp and killing it and
curling it on the hook and they love it that way. I've traveled all over
the flats all the way to the outer islands to find reds, but this week has
been a variety, I've caught flounders, drums, trout and reds all from the
same baits and same holes. The water situation limits where you can and
can't go right now, so be careful. Visit Capt. Charlie

5-1-08 Hello to all.
First off, I would like to thank the Rockport Chamber of Commerce for
putting on the Spring Fling. We had a lot of media and a lot of sponsors
turn out for the event. We had a great time. The croaker have arrived, and
the trout are ready and waiting. I'm catching them wading in depths of two
to three foot with very nice sizes. Yesterday I went wading for three
hours with croaker, and ended up with a limit, with six of them over
twenty inches. The smallest was over eighteen inches. Artificials in
menhaden imitation colors are also producing with trout. The reds are
feeding on mullet with steady catches. The menhaden are showing up in the
channels, and this will bring in the tide running reds. Look for the reds
in one to two foot of water, and we're using either mullet or menhaden.
The top water bite is also working on them early in the morning when it's
calm. The weather is starting to settle, or at least I hope it is, and the
fishing will be improving. If you want to wade for a trophy trout, now's
the time. Give me a call, i'm ready to take you wade fishing.
Call me:

Come On Down... Fishing is Great!
|
|
5-1-08 Weather-wise... We have had some really
nice days and we've had some really bad days. Some of our best fish were
caught on the not so good weather days. It's usually a case of timing. If
you can get to the coast a couple of days after a front moves through and
the wind and humidity returns from the southeast, that's your best chance
for a good catch. There are exceptions; ie. last Saturday we had a party
cancel at 7:30 am because of wind and rain. Not wanting to waste the live
bait I already had in the boat, I waited out the rain and went on my own
in about a 25 mph wind and caught three nice Reds. Go Figure. The clear
high pressure days are great for boating and suntans, but the fish sure
hunker down and get lockjaw! Come fish with us, we'll either catch fish or
get a suntan!
Good
Fishing to You!

5-1-08 The flounder gigging over the last 2
weeks has been very good with 20-30 fish on nearly every trip. The winds
have been blowing very hard, but the water is staying clear overall.
Most of the flounder have been 15-17", and have been sitting on deep mud
bottom. In the last 3 weeks the fish have really began to school
together, and it is not uncommon to gig 5-6 flounder in a single sand
pocket. The flounder are currently feeding on small shrimp and squid,
and some flounder have had up to 20 shrimp in their stomachs when
cleaning them.

4-17-08 "Hello Everyone" Wind is the
word this report as always April has usually been a windy month and this
year that has been the case. The wind can make fishing a lot harder than
normal but if you wait till you have the time the money and for the wind
to quit blowing you wont go fishing that is what my father in law told me
years ago. The best way to beat the wind is to get out early before it
starts blowing in the after noon and fish in hide out spots were you have
some protection from the wind behind that island you fish by anyway or up
on the flats or that old oil field channel that runs into the flats. Take
your chart out and look for places to hideout with the wind direction that
you are going to have that hold fish have a plan and you can make it work
The bait of choice has been live shrimp and cut pin perch.

5-1-08 Our fishing the last few weeks
has been good. I am getting limits of Reds without allot of effort.
These fish are on the upper end of the slot with a few oversize. When
the wind is blowing 30 anchoring is the most effective. Shrimp, crab and
and pin perch are all working well. I am still drifting with live shrimp
and popping corks and getting fair numbers of Trout. I saw some live
shad flicking yesterday and that means Trout fishing is about to bust
loose. We will be using croakers within two weeks for limits of Trout
early in the day. Also I will be using live shad for some very large
Trout. If you have never fished with shad your missing out. Trout and
Reds both will smash live shad like nothing else. May and June are
starting to fill up
so book your trip in advance. I will make sure you have a great trip.

5-1-08 I have a feeling this is going to be a
really good year. We are seeing tons of redfish up in the skinny water on
just about every flat. I was in Brown & Root on April 29 and there were at
least 5 big schools of reds cruising the flat. Unfortunately it was just
about glass calm and we were not able to get close enough to cast to them.
They were spooking off from the boat 100 to 150 feet away. Could have used
a little wind! Moved over to Ransom and dagger and found plenty of reds
there too. When we have not been able to sight fish Super Spook Jrs. have
worked well. For sight fishing I'm still throwing the TTF Killer Flats
minnows on 1/16 oz heads. Salt/Pepper/Chartreuse and Liquid Shrimp colors
have both worked well. Early in the morning look for the reds to be
tailing in the really shallow water. We have seen a lot of fish lately in
water less than 6" deep with their backs out. What a sight! Some clients
are telling me that they may not make the trip down this year due to the
fuel prices. Mention the high price of fuel when you book your trip and
I'll knock of $25.00 to help out. Come on down and let's hunt some fish.
