2-1-12 Hi fishrockport.com
readers! Fishing is still steady. I fished a group of guys for two days
and we caught redfish, trout , black drum & even caught a couple of
flounder. The answer is no we didn't fish intentionally for flounder they
were caught by sheer luck. We have caught fish in the boat as well as
wadefishing. Both ways we fished with soft plastics to fishing with shrimp
with good success. The water is in the 60's which for this time of year is
on the warm side, but hey we are enjoying good catches on my fishing
trips. Spring Break will be here before you know it ; so now is the time
to start planning your trip. Give me a call or send a email from my
website..........
Remember take a kid fishing.......

2-1-12 Trout are holding over
soft muddy bottoms especially those with scattered shell and sea grass.
You should expect them to move shallow as the temperatures warm, but still
remain near deeper water with softer bottoms. Drifting with soft plastics
is very effective right now and should continue to be through March. My
recommended drifting areas depending on the wind direction are Estes
Flats, California Hole, Dagger Flats .Use light/translucent colors for
your soft plastics when the water is clear. Conversely, darker seems to
work better when the water is more dingy.
So
meanwhile... be safe and good fishing to you,
Capt. Ray "Slick" Appel

2-1-12 Our duck season finally came to a close
this past Sunday. Overall my clients and I had a great season.
Looking forward to next year now! Fishing has been a little
slow around here as for fishing trips booked, but I've been running
a few the last couple of weeks. I have not fished for trout at all,
but there have been a few trout brought to the cleaning table for
supper by some other anglers I've seen. There is no bait available
at the bait stands, so I know the trout are biting on artificials.
Redfish are our staple this time of year and they have been fairly
easy for me to catch due to our low water conditions, few baitfish
in the bays, and very little boat traffic. The reds seem to be
holding a bit deeper than normal in the flats, and are also holding
in the deepest part of the lakes over muddy bottoms due to our low
water levels. Mullet or "Fish Bites" have been the best natural
baits for reds, but they have also been eating plastic swim tail
baits well too.
For the next month I will primarily be at the ranch with my hog &
javelina hunters taking care of them, but I do have a couple of
fishing trips to take care of during February. If you're looking for
a fun hunt with your kids, I still have some room for those of you
that might like to get one more hunt in before summer. I would also
like to mention that for those of you that are wanting to book some
early Spring fishing trips, now is the time to start thinking about
giving me a call. My available dates are starting to fill up for
Spring Break and the weekends during March are going fast too.
Until next time
remember when the cards are down
and the bet is called,
you have your
Ace in the Hole!

2-1-12 Hello Everybody,
Reds, drum and trout are in the flats. Reds and drum are eating
shrimp. Like the last month or so when the tide is low fish the
deeper drop offs. When the tide is up fish up on the flats. Limits
or very near limits are common. Also, when the tide is not quite low
enough for low water spots and not high enough for high water spots
reds will be in very shallow flats. On the days of absolutely no
wind you can run the flats and see the red fish. Trout are being
taken on soft plastics and even some top water. Trout are holding in
various bays on the deeper ends of shell reefs and the edge of
deeper grass. The weather will still be unpredictable, but if you
are flexible and can be on the water on the right days your fish box
will impress many. In other words, fun can still be had on the
water.

It's beginning to look a lot like spring, just checked the water
temperature at Port A and in Aransas Bay. Both reported low 60s for
January 29. The winds are shifting almost daily, so you need to be
alert for strong fronts moving in, don't get caught. A little patience
though and in a few weeks we will have some good weather and great
fishing. Trout fishing usually begins to get good when the bay water
temp gets into the upper 60s to low 70s. For you Croaker fishermen,
that usually starts about the second week in May. We will be ready
when the time is right so check with us by phone and we will let you
know when things look right.
Come fish with us!
Thanks
& Good Fishing to You!

2-1-12 Hello To Everyone,
There really has not been a winter per say here in Rockport this
year. For instance the water temperature at this time is usually in
the mid-50's and it is now in the mid 60's. Only time will tell what
effect these ranges from norm will have on the coast. Fishing has
been fair by slowly working 1/8 once purple chartreuse hoggies
around the reefs. Make sure you fish it slow! I believe once we are
into the middle of February and then into March the catching should
really pick up. It usually does. Don't forget Spring Break is just
around the corner and most everything "Books" up quickly. Please

Howdy all, Capt. Frank here hoping everybody is staying warm while
enjoying the outdoors. The right gear can make the difference between a
fun outing and a brutal experience. Just remember that the wind and cold
are a little more heighten when venturing out on the water. Just like
humans, fish seek out more comfortable conditions where food is readily
available. A soft muddy bottom of a channel or slough is a good place to
start. Big fish use the warmer muddy bottom to lay up and wait for an
unsuspecting bait fish to cruise by. Think of it like breakfast in bed.
The colder water temperature slows the fish's metabolism, so big trout may
eat only once a day. Big suspending baits are a good go to bait because
the fish will take the biggest bait it can expending the least amount of
energy. Baffin Bay has netted our customers some" whopper trout". When you
start catching a good amount of fish or a "whopper", try to work the area
over thoroughly. Lots of wade fishermen don't realize that they have waded
right through the fish. The sloughs on the backside of San Jose Island
that dump into Aransas Bay are a good choice to start out. On falling
tides, fish such as reds, trout, and flounder prowl these areas. Oversized
and keeper drum have been in every bay system we fish and in great
numbers. Cloudy mudded up water is a dead giveaway when seeking to tangle
with these brutes. We have witnessed drum schools so big that they look
like grazing cattle under the surface of the water. Copano and Port Bay
have been producing limits of reds and drum. Italian Bend and Mission Bay
are holding nice sized trout and in good numbers. As the air temperature
rises on sunny winter days, it warms the waters of shallow flats such as
Estes. Fish will follow bait fish into these areas for a quick meal before
they have to retreat back to their comfort zone as the temperature starts
to drop. Winter months are a great time to try your luck at catching a
fish of a lifetime. Give Coastal Legends a call and we will put you on
them. Remember to dress warm, be safe, and we hope to see you out there.

Fishing has been off and on lately. The tide has been sort of in
between the good high level and the good low level. That means not low
enough to put the reds on the drop-offs and not high enough to get
them on the flats that are easily accessible for most boats. We have
been picking up trout along the ICW on gulps and some black drum in
the deeper holes and channels on the flats using peeled shrimp. There
are still redfish around on the flats and the Lighthouse Lakes but
getting to them requires a shallow running boat. Some places you will
need to run in 8 inches and float in about 10 to 12 inches. We have
been getting the reds mostly on dark soft plastics and peeled shrimp.

1-16-12 Fishing is the Rockport
area is great. Look for redfish and black drum along shell bars and
channel edges. Dead shrimp is the bait of choice. it can be fished
on the bottom or on a cork. The alternative is Gulps in new penny
fished slow along the bottom. If the sun is bright and the wind
light look for trout on mud bottom near deep water. Fisherman should
sleep in and start at noon and fish the warmest water. Artificial
baits like Corkies and Gulp Jerk shad are a good choices. Come down
to Rockport and spend a day on the bay. Call me and book a fishing
trip.

Hello Friends, Still fishing between the fronts and it has
really been hit or miss. Some days have really been good and on other
days, the fish just seem to disappear. Live Shrimp has been the best
bait when you can find it. If I can't get any live, I've been using
dead Shrimp and Gulp Shrimp under a popping cork. The flats are still
good on warm days for Reds and Trout with some Black Drum mixed in.
I'm having to move a lot but when you find them, usually they will
bite. Estes, South Bay, and Dagger flats have all been good on some
days. The Sheepshead have started showing up along the channels and
structure. This is also a good time to fish the drop along the
Intercoastal, Lydia Ann, and Shrimp Boat channels.

Howdy Anglers, By the time you read this duck season will be
closed and we sure had a good season this year. My shooters pretty
much shot their limit of redheads and pintails on nearly every
shoot. I'm already excited for next season and going bye the number
of birds we saw this year hopefully we will have a great season next
year (cross our fingers). Ok, now to fishing. The trout are starting
to show up on the mud side of the reefs in copano bay and into
mesquite bay, also good numbers of trout in the fingers in St.
Carlos bay. The redfishing and black drum have still been plentiful
on the outside beaches of St. Jose island and also on Matagorda
island. We have been throwing shrimp for the redfish and drum, and
throwing soft plastic baits for the trout. If interested in fishing
