While winter
is winding down, there are big hungry fish all over the Texas coast.
So if you are tired of fighting traffic on your commute to work or bored
to death stuck at home because you think its too cold for outdoor
activities, give Coastal Legends a call down here in Rockport, Tx and lets
go party! with the fishes....I have had customers tell me it's too cold to
venture out on the water. I replied to them " you can't catch a 30- inch
trout sitting at home in front of the TV". I'm not fond of being wet
and cold either, so I came up with ways to stay warm and dry while out on
the water. Thermal long johns and socks are a good start with the addition
of layered clothing. neoprene waders and gloves take the bite out of the
chilled air and water. Make sure your wading boots fit comfortably because
if they are too tight they will cut off circulation which means frozen
feet. Face masks, scarves, and a warm jacket will complete your cold
weather fishing gear nicely.
We have been putting in countless hours out there traveling the waters
from Port O' Conner to Port Mansfield harvesting fins and feathers. This
duck season has been fantastic and ends on January 29th. Now is a perfect
time to get out on the chilly waters and catch some trophy fish. The guys
and I have been hammering down on big fat speckled trout, redfish, and
flounder in all the complexes we fish. The colder water temperatures and
low tides have concentrated fish in deep areas with a soft bottom giving
the angler a chance to really load up on some good quality fish. Trout use
these soft muddy bottoms to burrow down and wait for unsuspecting bait
fish. The soft mud bottoms are warmer than the top and center columns of
the water tables which attract bait fish and predators. A slow crawling
retrieve with your favorite lure of choice should do the trick.
Traveling through all the
different bays and waterways this time of year can be amazing. Cold clear
water reveals bottom structures and schools of fish not normally seen in
different times of the year. The winter time sunrises and sunsets are full
of spectacular colors from the light spectrum. All the migratory birds are
in full plumage with their individual brilliant colors that reach out and
grab the eyes. Whooping cranes and their majestic calls in the distance
are like cold songs to the ears. Many different species of shore birds
line the shorelines of sands beaches and spoil islands huddled together
for warmth. White pelicans kettling high above in the thermals look
sinister, bold, and serene. The skies fill up with ducks getting off the
water in such great numbers it looks like smoke forming on the water.
Deer, wild hogs, and coyotes are a common sight on our way to the spots we
refer to as "fish party spots".
When we start fishing, you will warm up in a hurry as you battle with a
huge fish thrashing about trying to throw the hook. They have been hungry
and cooperative on most days. Whether wading or comfort fishing from the
boat, throwing soft plastics and natural baits have been the ticket. The
guys have been seeking these rascals out by going into our preys
wintertime haunts and shoving the lure or bait in the fishes face, daring
them to bite. The staff here at Coastal Legends Guide Service work full
time to stay on top of the fish and ducks so you can get the most
enjoyment out of your fishing and hunting experience. So like Capt. Rico
says "Y'all come get on the boat and lets go party Coastal Legends style".
